Future Foundations HistoryText Box:

The dream was to create a safe place for local youth to go, and participate in healthy productive activities. The dream was to have a multi-faceted complex where every social service in the area was listed and available. The dream is now a reality!

Future Foundations Family Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with a diverse Board of Directors, has its roots in the tragic murder of a 12-year-old middle school student, Crystal La Pierre, at the hands of three local juveniles. The August 1993 incident was a wake-up call like no other, and community leaders have wisely chosen to invest like never before in Cibola County’s greatest resource, our children.

The Family Center is acknowledged by many state agencies as a model grass roots project for New Mexico and the rural Southwest. Its founders, a group of long-time Cibola County citizens who had unfailing belief in what the Family Center could become, were told time and again that such a building and organization could never be built. Since opening the doors in February 1999, the Family Center has welcomed more than 40,000 youth and adults, and that continues to grow everyday.

Since 1994, we have managed to raise some $4,000,000 from various public and private sources, including the State of New Mexico, Cibola County, City of Grants, Cibola County Schools, and many more, to support facility construction and program development. At least 50% of the funding has been obtained through In-Kind donations and volunteers.

Many are in awe when they consider what we have accomplished since the dream of a Family Center was first conceived. The community now has a beautiful and spacious, 27,000 square foot building, which includes a gym, multipurpose room, art and music room, computer lab, youth room, culinary arts kitchen, conference room, lounge, and 12 office spaces.

Programs at the Center are vast and varied, providing a healthy mix of recreational, educational, behavioral and cultural programs. All programs place an emphasis on delinquency prevention, work-force development, and youth involvement.

The Center has gained much of its effectiveness not only through collaboration with the various entities housed at the Center, but through its numerous partnerships and resource sharing with additional agencies. We have discovered that the way to “Catch the Dream” is through teamwork. As a team we will continue in our vision of “Working together for safer, healthier, more skilled Cibola County
